Thinking about visiting Portugal soon? Check out Antonio’s local recommendations. He’s our Portuguese representative and lives in Marinha Grande, a city between Porto and Lisbon in the central coast of Portugal. He joined the team in 2005 and is an experienced exchanger (19 and counting!) He loves travelling with his wife and two children.

The most amazing country I have visited so far is…

Quebec, Canada. It is a region with very friendly people and beautiful nature. I have tried to explore its nooks and crannies, but as it is a vast region, only visited a tiny fraction over a month. I had the opportunity to be treated to some typical delicacies offered by the neighbors, but the best of all was yet to come: a boat trip to see the whales. We had to make a long trip to Tadoussac, but it was worth it because we saw over 20 whales, some of them passing just under our feet!

A language I simply adore is…

Spanish. Sometimes I joke that my official language is Spanish because in my childhood I could only watch cartoons on the Spanish television station in my small village.

My favorite meal/dish is…

Portuguese sardines, but I don’t lose sight of the cod.

The best time of the year to visit my city is…

In the summer, because we have many beautiful beaches.

A local neighbourhood in my city that I recommend staying at…

Any place along the beach!

My favorite day in my city is…

Sunday, because there is an open market nearby.

The top three places to eat like a local in my city…

Marisqueira Tonico, Tromba Rija, and Solar dos Amigos.

A place to catch a live band…

The Old Beach bar.

A secret spot…

Nazareth Canyon.

The most amazing thing I have done during a home exchange holiday is…

It is not easy to choose one, but perhaps the one that amazed me the most was that boat trip on the St. Lawrence River, Quebec, to see the whales.

Something I always carry in my baggage…

A camera, of course!

One thing you can’t miss if you visit my city is…

Live glass manufacturing in the Atlantis factory.

The first thing I do when I arrive to a new exchange home is…

Look around and decide who stays in which room.

And the first thing I do when I come back to my home after the exchange…

Visit my family and friends.

If I could exchange with any place in the world for a whole year, I would definitely go to…

This is a difficult question because I like all countries in their own way, but I would like to return to Canada or California. Australia and Brazil also, because I haven’t yet been there and I like to explore the unknown.
